Mata Hari: 1876-1917; Mata Hari, was a Dutch exotic dancer, courtesan, and accused spy who was executed by firing squad in France under charges of espionage for Germany during World War I. Mata Hari’s name has since become synonymous with espionage, although it remains by no means clear that she was guilty of the spying for which she charged.
