The Baby Nancy doll, released in 1968 by Shindana Toy Co., was born by Operation Bootstrap. A California-based grassroots organization that grew out of the aftermath of the Watts riots of 1965, it was among the very first black-owned and black-financed toymakers in the world, and focused its early creations specifically on what was then coined “the Negro market.”
