British civilians during poisonous gas attack drill in London. Note the young mother at the end of the line carrying the full mask for a child under five. An early fear was that the Germans could use gas bombs during their aerial attack against the UK. After the war, the fear was shown to be unfounded since Hitler, himself a victim of gas during his service in the trenches, was adamantly against using the stuff.
