Monty’s statue stands in Whitehall, outside the MOD & was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother – 6.6.1980. FM Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, KG, GCB, DSO, PC (17.11.1887 24.3.1976), nicknamed “Monty” and the “Spartan General” was a British Army officer. Saw action in WWI & seriously wounded. During WWII he commanded the 8th Army from August 1942 in the Western Desert until the final Allied victory in Tunisia. This command included the Battle of El Alamein.
