This innocuous looking scene is actually the disposal pit for the ashes of people murdered at Auschwitz and incinerated at Crematorium IV. Even though cremation negated the need for burial, the sheer volume of the murdered meant that huge pits had to be dug to try to hide the evidence of genocide. The soil around many extermination camps even today is sickeningly fertile.
