A column of Russian POWs trudges along under guard by a single German grenadier, early phase of Barbarossa. The numbers of Soviet POWs between June and October 1941 was such that often thousands of men were passed to the rear under scant guard and left to fend for themselves until logistics could decide how to transfer them away from the front.
